چکیده

The properties and applications of the normal log-normal (NLN) mixture are considered. The moment of the NLN mixture is shown to be finite for any positive order. The expectations of exponential functions of a NLN mixture variable are also investigated. The kurtosis and skewness of the NLN mixture are explicitly shown to be determined by the variance of the log-normal and the correlation between the normal and log-normal. The issue of testing the NLN mixture is discussed. The NLN mixture is fitted to a set of crosssectional data and a set of time-series data to demonstrate its applications. In the time series application, the ARCH-M effect and leverage effect are separately estimated and both appear to be supported by the data. JEL Classification: C22, C51, G12

Fat tails and asymmetry in financial volatility models

Although the GARCH model has been quite successful in capturing important empirical aspects of financial data, particularly for the symmetric effects of volatility, it has had far less success in capturing the effects of extreme observations, outliers and skewness in returns. This paper examines the GARCH model under various non-normal error distributions in order to evaluate skewness and lepto...

Exp-Kumaraswamy Distributions: Some Properties and Applications

In this paper, we propose and study exp-kumaraswamy distribution. Some of its properties  are derived, including the density function, hazard rate function, quantile function, moments,  skewness  and kurtosis.   Adata set isused to illustrate an application of the proposed distribution. Also, we obtain a new distribution by transformation onexp-kumaraswamy distribution.   New distribution is an...

Distribution of the Exchange Rate Implicit in Option Prices: Application to TASE

This study presents a method of estimating the implied distribution of the future NIS/$ exchange rate implicit in the NIS/$ options traded on the TASE (Tel Aviv Stock Exchange), using options with the same maturity but different strike prices. The distribution of the exchange rate as perceived by the markets is reflected by the option prices with different strike prices, because of the high sen...

Modelling asset return using multivariate asymmetric mixture models with applications to estimation of Value-at-Risk

Value-at-Risk (VaR) is a widely used statistical measure in financial risk management for quantifying the level of risk associated with a specific investment portfolio. It is well-known that historical return data exhibit non-normal features, such as heavy tails and skewness. Current analytical (parameteric) calculation of VaR typically assumes the distribution of the portfolio return to be a n...

Normal mixture diffusion with uncertain volatility: Modelling short- and long-term smile effects

This paper introduces a parameterization of the normal mixture diffusion (NMD) local volatility model that captures only a short-term smile effect, and then extends the model so that it also captures a long-term smile effect. We focus on the binomial’ NMD parameterization, socalled because it is based on simple and intuitive assumptions that imply the mixing law for the normal mixture log price...
